Responsibilities of the Nursing Faculty Liaison:

 

 

1.       Select appropriate preceptored experiences, taking into consideration the following:

  1. The role of nursing in the setting.
  2. Location and accessibility of the setting.
  3. Safety of the students.
  4. Diversity of the population served.
  5. Willingness to accommodate student experiences.
  6. Number of other programs/students using the setting.
  7. Interdisciplinary nature of setting.
  8. Present trends of health care delivery.

 

2.       Select qualified preceptors based on the following criteria:

  1. Licensed as a RN or LVN in State of Texas.
  2. If non-RN, shall have a bachelor’s degree as a health care professional (ex. PT, OT, RD).
  3. Competence in designated area of practice.
  4. Philosophy of health care congruent with that of the nursing program.

 

3.       Obtain written agreement with the clinical preceptor.

 

4.       Orient the clinical preceptor and student to the experience.

 

5.       Provide orientation packet to the clinical preceptor.

 

6.       Assume overall responsibility for teaching and evaluation of the student.

 

7.       Assure student compliance with standards on immunization, OSHA standards, CPR, and current liability insurance coverage.

 

8.       Collaborate with the preceptor and the agency to determine student learning needs and learning opportunities so that appropriate assignments will be made.

 

9.       Maintain communication with the clinical preceptor, agency, student, and nursing program.

 

10.   Meet regularly and as necessary with the clinical preceptor and the student to monitor and evaluate the learning experience.

 

11.   Monitor student progress.

 

12.   Be readily available, easily accessible.  Provide means for the preceptor to contact the faculty liaison and/or the Dean of the Health Science Center.

 

13.   Receive feedback from the preceptor regarding student performance.  Ensure that evaluation tools are completed.
