Role of the Clinical Preceptor with the TVCC nursing student:

 

1.      Function as a role model in the clinical setting.

 

2.      Facilitate learning activities.

 

3.      Orient the student to the assigned area.

 

4.      Guide, facilitate, supervise, and monitor the student in achieving the clinical objectives.

 

5.      Supervise the student’s performance of skills and other nursing activities to assure safe practice.  Students may never give an IV push medication without an instructor.

 

6.      Collaborate with faculty to review the progress of the student towards meeting clinical objectives.

 

7.      Provide feedback to the student regarding clinical performance (utilizing the evaluation tool).

 

8.      Contact the faculty if assistance is needed or if any problem with student performance occurs.

 

9.      Give feedback to the nursing program regarding clinical experience for student and suggestions for program development.

 

10.  Retain ultimate responsibility for the care of clients.

 

Responsibilities of the Student:

 

1.      Maintain current CPR.

 

2.      Have current physical exam and be up to date with immunizations.

 

3.      Maintain open communications with preceptor and faculty.

 

4.      Be accountable for his/her own learning.

 

5.      Be accountable for his/her own nursing actions.

 

6.      Be prepared for clinical.

 

7.      Arrange for preceptor’s supervision when performing procedures.

 

8.      Maintain confidentiality.

 

9.      Present evaluation form to preceptor to complete, and submit to instructor following the experience.
