General Educational Development (or GED) tests are a group of four subject tests which, when passed, certify that the taker has American or Canadian high school-level academic skills.


GED Information

The GED test is administered on the Athens campus only.

The 2002 GED Testing Series was replaced beginning January 2, 2014. Incomplete or insufficient GED scores from the 2002 series are no longer valid.

The GED is available on computer on the Athens campus only. The GED computer-based-test (CBT) is given most Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Advantages of the GED computer-based-test (CBT):

  • Testing is by appointment at your preferred date and time.
  • No additional trip to Athens for registration.
  • Six attempts allowed on each test instead of three.
  • English and Spanish language GED is available on computer.
Registration for GED computer testing is by calling the GED CALL CENTER 1-877-EXAM-GED or by going online at www.ged.com.The cost for GED CBT is $33.75 per test with a total of $135 for all four subjects by debit or credit card. Retest costs are: $13.75 for the second and third attempt. 
 
 

The GED test is administered on the Athens campus only in order for individuals to earn a Certificate of Equivalency for High School Achievement.   The current test has four parts:
Time
Test 1 Language Arts 150 minutes
Test 2 Social Studies 90 minutes
Test 3 Science 90 minutes
Test 4 Math 115 minutes
Total Test Time 8.25 hours
     

Requirements for Testing:
Applicants must be 18 years of age and be officially withdrawn from school.  A 17 year-old may register to test if they have a "Permit to Test" signed by an official from the last school attended and their parent or guardian's written permission.  "Permit to Test" forms are available at www.gedcomputer.com.  A 16 year-old may not test without a court order that includes a case/cause/docket number on it.

Fees:
The fee for the entire GED is $135 or $33.75 for each subtest.

Identification:
Examinees must be residents of the state of Texas.  Each examinee must present a valid (photo) Texas driver's license or Department of Public Safety Identification Card at the time of testing.  A military photo ID, a valid passport or a government issued ID is acceptable if examinee has no Texas Driver's License or State ID card.  No other form of photo ID is acceptable.

Registration:

  • Examinees must pre-register and pre-pay by going to www.ged.com or by calling the toll-free phone number, 1-877-EXAM-GED. Payment is by debit or credit card only.
  • If the examinee is under the age of 18, the appropriate documents (withdrawal form, parent/guardian wavier for 17 year-olds and the court order for 16 year-olds) must be submitted to the GED Call Center at www.ged.com.

Test Dates and Times:

Test dates are most Tuesdays and Wednesday each month. For exact dates, see the TVCC Calendar or go to www.ged.com.

Special Accommodations: 
Contact the GED Call Center for information regarding special accommodations for candidates with documented disabilities.

Retesting:

Scores from tests taken prior to January 1, 2014 are no longer valid.  If you tested prior to January 1, 2014, you will be required to begin again on all parts of the GED 2014.The 2002 GED Testing Series was replaced beginning January 2014.

Scores:
After taking the GED 2014 subtests, login to your MyGED account by going to www.GED.com. Select the "scores" tab for your test scores. For a copy of your score report, go to the Texas Education Agency GED website for $5 to be printed on one's own printer. The website is: www.texged.com.


GED Classes:
The TVCC Adult Education department offers practice test sessions and classes to prepare for the GED exam.
