Mass notification system sends important info via text, e-mail

Trinity Valley Community College offers a simple way for students, faculty and staff to stay updated on important information.

TVCC Alert is a mass notification system used to convey vital information to students, faculty and staff via text messages, e-mail, RSS feeds or PDAs  (personal digital assistants). There is no charge to subscribe to the alert system, and registering is a simple process that takes only a few minutes on the TVCC Information Technology page.

“TVCC Alert is a great resource for students to get information on important events such as school closings and weather events, especially at this time of year when the weather can sometimes bring ice and snow,” TVCC President Dr. Glendon Forgey said. “It’s just a great way for students to keep in touch.”

The TVCC Alert system was an invaluable tool last semester when it was used twice to inform students, faculty and staff about campus closings due to dangerous winter weather conditions.

TVCC Alert would also be used to disseminate quick information regarding any type of campus crisis. In those instances, the system would be used to pass along critical safety information, said TVCC Police Chief Stewart Newby.

“It is important during those early few moments after an incident occurs that we feed our students and other campus employees facts, rather than people trying to find out through rumors or secondhand information,” Newby said. “The more students, faculty and staff we can reach as early as possible, the more they are going to be able to make an informed personal decision regarding their safety.”

The alert system will also provide information regarding IT or Internet outages, traffic and parking and other events. Participants may choose to receive information only from the campus they attend.

You must have a Cardinal ID number to register, which can be done via the following link: http://www2.tvcc.edu/IT-Services/zone.aspx?deptid=148&zoneid=164
