Course Descript= ion

 &nb= sp;          Throughout the semester, we will study the major trends and events in US history prior to 1877.  This course is designed to allow students to recognize and appreciate the diversity of life experienced thro= ughout various regions of the United States prior to 1877.  The class is a distance-learning c= ourse. This course is based on a series of readings, exams, a writing assignment, = and internet activities.  It will = be necessary for you to complete each component.  The outlay of the semester will be= as follows:

 

Unit I

Unit I will inc= lude the study of Ancient America, settlement of the new world and the onset of = northern and southern colonies.  Requir= ed Readings: Chapters= 1 thru 4.

 

I= mportant dates for Unit I:

February 15, 20= 10: Name of book for book review to be submitted for approval.   

<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>        =    Completion of Unit 1. = Exam dates to be posted.

 

Unit II<= /b>

Unit II will in= clude the study of the American Revolution, the US Constitution, building the nat= ion and the expanding Republic.  Required Readings: Chapters 5 thru 10.

Unit III

Unit III will i= nclude moving west, slavery, the Mexican War, events leading up to the Civil War, = the Civil War and reconstruction.  Required Readings: Chapters 11 thru 15.

April 16, 2010:= Last day to drop a course.

TESTS

Tests will cons= ist of multiple choice, matching and short answer, and/ or short essays.

 

        &= nbsp;   All exams must be taken in a TVCC testing center.  It is the student’s responsi= bility to contact your testing center to make exam arrangements.  Make contact with your testing cen= ter one week before you take your exam.  Each exam will have a deadline date.  Make note of all exam deadlines.  Please email instructor upon compl= etion of each exam.  If you miss an = exam deadline, the test will not be reopened.

 

Book review

 =  The approved book will be on a topi= c or person appropriate to the time period and topic of study.  Minimum pages of book: 225.  The instructor will establish if t= he reading is appropriate for the assignment.  Follow the book review guidelines t= hat are posted on the website.  Wh= en you submit the book selection or book review, please type book review in the subject box.  It is your respo= nsibly to make sure that all assignments are sent correctly.

 

Written Class Discussion

        &= nbsp;   Please visit the discussion board at least twice a week.  Students will be required to parti= cipate in class discussions by posting messages within the on line discussion area.  Students will respond t= o the instructors posted questions and are required to respond to contributions made by fellow students.  Comments must be at= least five sentences long and demonstrate some historical evidence in order to sc= ore a passing grade.  Please remem= ber that as the semester progresses, discussion questions may be closed once the topic as been exhausted.  Mean= ingful participation in ten class discussions has the potential to generate up to = 10 points per question for a total of 100 points.  There will be no credit for copying previous postings. =

        &= nbsp;   While we will not meet as a class, I do want to remind you that in our on line discussions there are bound to be differing viewpoints.  These differences enhance the lear= ning experience and promote an atmosphere where students will be encouraged to t= hink and to learn from each other.  It is to be expected that students will respect the views of each other.  I will defend the principles of fr= ee speech allowing each student to feel comfortable in expressing his or her individual opinions.  Be court= eous and respectful as you post your responses.
