COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course includes the study of personnel policies and administration, education, training, job classification and analysis, labor supply, employment and testing, hours of work, labor union relations, and employee safety and health problems.
Course Learning Outcomes:
The student will acquire an understanding of the following course learning outcomes:
§ An understanding of the Human Resource Management activities in small and large organizations
§ An understanding of the different roles of the Human Resource Management department
§ An understanding that individual performance, motivation, and employee retention leads to organizational success
§ An understanding of the changing composition of the United States workforce
§ An understanding of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws, regulations, and requirements
§ An understanding of how to develop job descriptions and job specifications
§ An understanding of the staffing process, which involves recruiting and selecting qualified applicants
§ An understanding of the training process and delivery methods
§ An understanding of how to conduct a performance appraisal
§ An understanding of employee benefits and compensation practices
§ An understanding of federal and state laws that employers must comply with in maintaining a healthy, safe and secure workforce
§ An understanding of the role of labor unions in organizations
Prerequisites:
1. Need internet connection with email address
2. A word processor such as Word, Word Perfect, or Works
WebCT Log-In Procedure:
This is a Web-CT based course. Go to http://courses.tvcc.edu. Log in using last name, irst initial and last four digits of your social security number (Ex: doej1234). Use all lower case letters. The password will be the last four digits of your social security number. If you cannot log in, call Karen McGrew at 903-675-6324.
What Do I Do First?
Once you log in, select the syllabus icon and print the course syllabus. Next, select the Unit Assignments icon and print them for Units 1 – 3. Click on the other icons on the homepage and read the data. Then, begin reading the chapters and working the assignments.

Assessments/Final Grade:
The course will include three objective assessments, a final project and three unit assignments (containing two assignments in each unit). The final grade for each student will be determined using the point system.
Each major assessment and final project will be worth 200 points for a total of 800 points. Assignments will consist of 6 exercises (worth 40 points each) and will total 240 points. Total possible points will be 1040. Final grade will be determined using the following scale:
A = 931 – 1040
B = 827 – 930
C = 723 – 826
D = 619 – 722
F = below 619

Drop Date Policy:
If the student needs to drop a course or withdraw from the college, you must complete an official drop form from the Guidance Office to withdraw from this course by April 13, 2007 or contact the VCT coordinator at your college.
The instructor will not drop you from this course. You will be given an “F” rather than a “W” if YOU fail to complete the course work and YOU do not drop the course.

A. Complete #10 Incident, p.37, “Too Much Diversity?”
Ø Answer questions 1-3, p.37
B. Complete Case #16, pgs. 50-56, “The Storage Room Massage: A Case of Sexual Harassment?”
Ø Carefully read and analyze this case on pgs. 50-56
Ø Answer questions 1-3, p.51
Unit II
A. Complete three out of the fifteen scenarios from Exercise # 20, pgs. 65-69, “Is this Unlawful Discrimination?”
Ø Answer the following questions about each of the three you select to respond to.
1. What legal statute(s) apply in this case?
2. What issue(s) must the court decide in this case?
3 a. If you were the judge, how would you rule?
3 b. Did the employer discriminate unlawfully? Why or why not?
B. Complete Exercise 22, pgs. 73-74, “Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act”
Ø Select 3 out of the 5 to respond to.
Ø Under Part IV Procedures – Do A & C #1 & 2.
Unit III
A. Complete Exercise #31, pgs. 106-108, “Which Employee Should Be Terminated?”
Ø Write a short explanation of which title examiner should be fired and your justification for your decision.
B. Complete Case #52, pgs.179-180, “The Safety Training Program”.
