A continuation of ENGL 1301 with emphasis on the study and critical evaluation of modern literature, primarily from American writers of fiction, poetry, and drama. Oral and writtten communication, a research paper, and elementary original critical evaluation techniques are used.Course Focus

NOTICE TO STUDENTS: This online class will use the Kirszner & Mandell Literature: Reading, Reacting, Writing in the sixth edition. The text will be packaged with software and a companion handbook. You will need to buy the packaged set from the Trinity Valley Community College bookstore so that you will be sure to have all the materials you will need to participate in online peer evaluations as the semester progresses.
You can call the TVCC bookstore in Athens to order the set if you can't get to the bookstore to pick it up. The bookstore number is 903-675-6223.
Course Goals:
1. Students will gain critical thinking skills as they examine literature
2. Students will learn writing methods that are specific to the art of writing about literature but which transfer to easily to any type of academic or professional writing in which students will engage
3. Students will learn the art of analyzing and interpreting literature
4. Students will become more aware of the world around them as they read, enjoy, and examine literature, its backgrounds, its themes, and its authors
5. Students will learn literary terms essential to talking about literature
6. Students will learn research skills

Student Contributions
In a variety of asynchronous activities ("asynchronous" means a different place and time), the student will read and analyze texts, participate in online discussions, share research, and cooperate in group work to address literary questions relating to various texts.
Four Essays: 20%
Research Essay: 10%
Class Discussion and Quizzes: 10%
Attendance: 10%
Midterm Exam: 20% (proctored exam at a TVCC testing site)
Final Exam: 30% (proctored exam at a TVCC testing site)
