Course Goals:

1. =20 To acquire an understanding of average and = normal=20 development of young children.

2. =20 To acquire a basic introductory understanding of = possible causes and characteristics of exceptionalities.

3. =20 To acquire a basic introductory understanding of = special=20 developmental needs of young children.

4. =20 To gain an understanding of the inclusion = process.

5. =20 To develop basic skills in using accepted = educational=20 intervention techniques with young children with special needs.

6. =20 To develop the introductory skills to work with = the=20 parents of children with special needs to make referrals to available=20 resources.

7. =20 To explore ways to be an advocate for children = with=20 special needs.

COURSE POLICIES:

Since this is an on-line course offered over on the = Internet,=20 assignments will be due by the due date. =20 You may work at your own pace, however, and turn in assignments = early,=20 but they must be submitted in the order given (in other words, don=92t = submit=20 assignment #5 before submitting assignment #4). The Lab work may be submitted = at any=20 time on or before the due date. =20 Each weekly assignment has a value of ten points. ONE POINT will be = deducted for=20 each day an assignment is late. Assignments will = not be=20 accepted more that 3 days late. =20 (For example, if the assignment is due on the 22nd and received = on the=20 24^th, 2 points would be deducted. If the assignment is due on = the=20 22^nd and is received on the 26^th, you will receive = a grade=20 of zero. Due dates for = assignments=20 will be strictly adhered to. = A=20 calendar will be provided outlining due dates for all tests and = assignments.

ONLINE=20 INSTRUCTIONS

=FC =20 1. Complete = the=20 Blackboard tutorial prior to the beginning of the semester.

=FC =20 2. All = assignments=20 will be submitted to the instructor via Blackboard.

=FC =20 3. Each = assignment=20 must have your name and the number of the assignment at the beginning of = your=20 paper.

=FC =20 4. In any=20 correspondence with the instructor, always designate the course number = CDEC 1459 as your subject = line.

GRADES

Each weekly assignment has a value of 10 = points. (10 assignments for a = possible value=20 or 100 points). This is = worth 25%=20 of you grade.=20
The=20 Lab assignment will have a total value of 100 Points and is worth 25% = of your=20 grade.=20
Three tests will be given. Test #1 will cover chapters = 1-5. Test #2 will cover chapters = 6-11. Test #3 will cover chapters=20 11-19. These three = tests will be=20 averaged and will be worth 25% of your grade.=20
A=20 comprehensive final exam will be the final 25% of your grade. =

You will be expected to:

Read the weekly reading assignments in the text.=20
Complete weekly assignments (use 12 point font, = correct=20 spelling and grammar, and make answers clear) and submit via = Blackboard.=20
Complete Lab assignment.=20
Complete test # 1, 2, 3, and the final exam via = Blackboard by=20 their due dates (You do not need to go to a testing center!)=20
Keep a copy of all submitted work. If an assignment is lost, it = will be=20 your responsibility to resubmit it for grading.=20
Once an assignment is graded and returned, you must = keep a=20 copy of the graded assignment in electronic format. Then if there is a dispute = on the=20 grade, you have verification of grade received.

TVCC Policy: =20 Limitations on the Number of W=92s

Limitations to the Number of Withdrawals from = Courses=20 (Handout for Students)

A new THECB Rule has been established to address = a new law=20 enacted by the legislature regarding the number of withdrawals ("W's") = that a=20 student may have during their academic career (THECB Rules: Chapter 4,=20 Subchapter A, 4.10). The law states that any student whose first = semester in=20 college is Fall 2007 or later may not have more than six unexcused = withdrawals=20 (W's) during their academic career. This applies to a student's academic = record=20 from all higher education institutions attended. If a student has six = unexcused=20 withdrawals, they will no longer be allowed to withdraw from a course = without=20 receiving a grade in the course (which will be an "F"). To determine if = a=20 withdrawal is excused, a student must process a withdrawal request = through the=20 guidance services office. If an instructor initiates a withdrawal, it is = automatically an unexcused withdrawal. It is the student's = responsibility to=20 officially withdraw from a course.

If the student initiates a withdrawal through = Guidance=20 Services, then the counselor may determine whether the withdrawal is = excused.=20 Generally, a student-initiated withdrawal will be determined to be = excused if=20 there is a "good cause" for the withdrawal as determined by the = professional=20 judgment of the counselor. Examples of "good cause" include, but are not = limited=20 to, the following: (a) a student has or is caring for a dependent who = has a=20 severe illness or debilitating condition, (b) a student has a death in = the=20 family, (c) a student has a change in active military service, (d) a = student's=20 family member has a change in active military service, or (e) a student=20 experiences a change in work schedule beyond their control.

Unexcused Withdrawals

Withdrawals initiated by the instructor will be = considered=20 unexcused. Student-initiated withdrawals that are NOT deemed to be due = to "good=20 cause" by guidance office personnel will be considered unexcused.

After the sixth unexcused withdrawal, the = student must=20 receive a grade in the course regardless of whether a faculty member = initiates a=20 withdrawal. Therefore, if a faculty member initiates the seventh = unexcused=20 withdrawal the student will receive an "F" in the course.

Academic Integrity

Among the violations of academic integrity are: = cheating,=20 plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, = personal=20 misrepresentation and proxy, bribes, favors, and threats.

Any work that is submitted for grading should = belong to=20 you. Your work must = reflect your=20 own personality and understanding; work copied from another is = unacceptable and=20 grounds for a breach of academic integrity. Specifically, as academic = integrity=20 issues relate to this course, if it is discovered that you are not = completing=20 your own assignments, you will fail this course. The moral of this story is to = study with=20 others, but DO YOUR OWN = WORK!=20
