- Head Football Coach
Brad Smiley
just completed his second year as head football coach with Trinity Valley,
and 2008 certainly provided a lot excitement for him and the TVCC
faithful. They opened the season 4-0, with impressive wins over
Dodge City, Louisiana College, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Cisco
Junior College, averaging 48.5 points per contest and reaching as high
as #12 in the national polls. After suffering back-to-back losses
to the #1 and #5 NJCAA ranked teams, the Cardinals finished strong with
victories over Tyler Junior College and Arkansas Baptist College to
propel them into the regional championship playoffs. Trinity
Valley finished the 2008 season ranked #21 in the final polls.
The Cardinals had 6 players in 2008 earn 1st or 2nd Team All-Conference
honors, along with 7 conference players of the week and 3 national
players of the week. In Smiley's two seasons at the helm, TVCC has
had 10 SWJCFC All-Conference performers and 1 NJCAA All-American.
Upon his arrival as head
coach in January of 2007, Smiley was no stranger to Athens, Texas.
This would be his second stint with the program
serving as the offensive line and tight ends coach as well as recruiting
coordinator in the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
Other than his four seasons at Trinity Valley, Coach Smiley has spent his career in
coaching at the Division I level.
Smiley came
to Trinity Valley after spending 7 seasons in New Orleans at Tulane University.
The majority of which he served as recruiting coordinator, as well as
coaching
the tight ends. During his tenure at Tulane he was a part of an offensive
staff
that helped produce the university's all-time leading passer, leading scorer and
leading rusher as well as several all-time leading receivers. Also,
offensively laying claim to 3 of Tulane’s top 5 seasons in total yardage
and passing yardage. While at Tulane he was a part of the team’s 2002
Hawaii Bowl Championship, 2005 Disney’s Wide World of Sports
Spirit Award and 2005 Football Writers of America
Association Courage Award.
During his
previous stop at Trinity Valley, Coach Smiley was part of the 1999
Southwestern Junior College Football Conference Championship and 1999
Red River Bowl
Championship team. The offense won league rushing titles in 1998 and
1999 and ranked top 10 nationally in rushing in both seasons. Smiley
coached 3 All-Conference and 2 All-Americans
during his tenure at TVCC.
Smiley
began his coaching career at his alma mater, Baylor University, as a
student assistant in 1995. Then moved to Northwestern State
University in Natchitoches, Louisiana where he spent the 1996 and 1997
seasons coaching the team’s tight ends. He was a part of the1997
Southland Football Conference Championship team helping NSU advance to
the NCAA Division I-AA Championship playoffs.
Smiley is married to the
former Janna
Clary of Natchitoches, Louisiana and the couple has two children, Benjamin Andrew,
6 and
Clary Ann, 4
